December 19 - knowing the story by heart

Another day - and three more lots of carols. I really am carolled out. A meeting of people with sight issues, a school carol service and a choir concert tonight. This morning mid carols one lady turned to the lady sitting next to her and said “isn’t it funny we can’t remember what we did yesterday and yet we know all the words to these.” Someone later gave me a carol sheet at a gathering. I laughed I might, having sung them for nearly a month, know them by heart by now!

Does what we know by heart lift us? I was listening to Rylan on Radio 2 driving to the school carol service in the afternoon. He had Michelle McManus on who won Pop Idol twenty one years ago. How come I knew all the words to All This Time still? It was fun to sing along in the privacy of the car.

Maybe we need to relearn the story of God coming so we are able to enjoy it again and are confident in telling it to others. Maybe we’ve forgotten our lines like actors who freeze in a play. Maybe we have lost the joy and wonder in the story it isn’t worth sharing anymore.

Singing carols is a way of sharing the story.
School nativities are a way of sharing the story.
And let’s be honest - people will come to church on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day or watch their little one be Mary or Joseph who only engage with the story once a year. We’ve only one chance to be relevant and engaging that they might want to hear more in 2024.

Otherwise if we are dull or not sure of what we are saying or singing we might get the reaction of the little child standing at the back at the school carol service who two minutes into the thing said very loudly: “IS IT GOING TO END SOON?”
