December 5 - Enough

We had our church Christmas dinner this afternoon. It was meant to be two courses but the minister somehow got Christmas pudding too and he wasn’t complaining about that!

Everyone had a lovely time of conversation and good food and it was nice to see every plate went back empty. Everyone had had enough.

These weeks are full of feasting and joy and being together with friends. Such occasions where food is involved are a foretaste of heaven I think. Heaven in Psalm 23 is a lavish banquet full of good things for God’s faithful people, victory - in the presence of enemies! Our cup overflows…

Of course we need to remember those who will not have enough this Christmas and we need a new commitment to work for a just and equal sharing of the world’s resources. The portion sizes today were enough for the more senior appetite let me say. We’ve all been to those carverys where people take far too much and they cannot eat it all so the food is wasted. That’s why in the desert after leaving Egypt the people were only given enough for today. I heard today about David, whose funeral I’m taking next week. David lived frugally. He would go to the shop and buy one banana or one potato. He only bought what he needed. When you went round his house you got one biscuit. Never two! Enough.

In this season of over indulgence for most people, let’s enjoy ourselves but let’s not be greedy and let’s work for a society where all have enough and are satisfied.
