December 22 - Reading the signs

There was a small panic in Ripon today as people saw closing down signs all over Yorkshire Trading! Luckily there was small print on the signs - it’s only closing to be refurbished. Probably to fit more stuff in!

A good sign can attract people to see what’s going on. We were glad to be at the carol service at the Leper Chapel here tonight. Ros, their chaplain was thrilled so many people she didn’t know were there. They’d put up a huge sign advertising it outside a couple of weeks ago.

A bad sign can do huge damage like out of date notice boards or things on it you can’t read. I remember a new notice board being put up at Trinity Storrington where I was the minister between 2007 and 2012. The board had a tiny little window to put posters in. They had some lovely posters with Christian messages on. But the tiny window was too small for them so you couldn’t see all the message. They put one in which was meant to say “you are loved and unique.” All you could see in the window was “you are oved and uniqu.” I said “it says oved and uniqu!” But it stayed up.

Can we read the signs as Christmas gets nearer? A heavenly host? A star in the sky? Are there signs God is at work. We are oved and uniqu! We can be so overwhelmed rushing about we miss what’s being shown us. So maybe with three days to go we just need to look for the signs. We need to put into practice what we hear in our carols. Hush your noise ye men of strife and hear the angels sing.
